1. The Martian: The Era of Earthlings Touring Mars
“The time has come for humanity to make a new leap. We will send humans to Mars by 2025.”
In 2016, Elon Musk attended the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), the most authoritative event in the aerospace sector, and confidently proclaimed his plan to send humans to Mars in the near future. In 2015, the United States legislated commercial space exploration, ushering in the era of "New Space." In other words, anyone equipped with the necessary technology and capital could now "visit" space without authorization from federal governments or international bodies. Consequently, financial power became the paramount factor in determining who would preemptively occupy and conquer an openly accessible space. If the 20th-century space race between the Soviet Union and the United States was a contest of national interest and pride, the 21st-century space race has transformed into a battlefield for the ostentatious display of capital. We have truly entered an era where competitors vie with sheer capital power over who will claim the routes of space travel, while the entire world spectates. Elon Musk was the one who swiftly seized this timing, staking his wager on his characteristic showmanship. When Musk fired this signal flare to the world, artist Lee Jaekyun, watching the live broadcast from a military base, felt a peculiar sensation—the sense of inhabiting the contemporary moment was profoundly disparate. At the very moment Musk declared his intention to send humans to Mars, Lee felt a sharp dissonance, conscious of living what felt like a "regressive life."
Is it possible for Earthlings to visit Mars? According to NASA, nine conditions must be met for a human to survive in space for more than an hour. These comprise defense and preparedness against the space environment, including oxygen, water, psychological decline, gravity, radiation, temperature, energy, and cosmic dust. Yet neither Elon Musk nor any private enterprise has presented a clear countermeasure or solution to these demands. Nevertheless, the number of startups entering the New Space industry continues to proliferate daily, and through their boasted repertoire of flashy and intricate technologies, everything seems entirely possible. Meanwhile, the sheer scale of the space industry expands relentlessly. Between the conservative perspective of scientists asserting that space is not yet welcoming to humanity, and the smiles of capitalists proclaiming the advent of Mars tourism, which one is the truth?
2. New Space: Science or Myth
Artist Lee Jaekyun approaches space exploration in the New Space era through the photographic medium. This methodology unfolds across three primary avenues: first, appropriating moving images and photographs released by NASA or state-led scientific research institutes; second, visiting such institutions in person to shoot reportage photography and video; and third, staging and shooting theatrical tableaux devised by the artist himself.
The photographs corresponding to the first and second categories align with the typical imagery evoked by terms like "science lab" or "space exploration agency." Images of authoritative, cold, and subtly conservative spaces instantly transport us to solemn and venerable scientific laboratories. The exertion and various strategic ploys deployed by the artist to capture or acquire these photographs are themselves worthy of note as creative research practices. The artist signs lengthy documents bound by clauses such as "distribution for non-commercial purposes only," constantly risks the denial of shooting permits, visits the relevant institutions, and showcases the successfully captured photographs in the exhibition.
The artist stages and photographs theatrical enactments based on the aforementioned "nine conditions for human survival in space" published by NASA. These photographs are articulated as somewhat comical and nonsensical imagery. For instance, in the scenario addressing "oxygen," he photographs a figure whose body is covered with clusters of balloons—a figure who is, of course, the artist himself. In this way, the theme of "New Space" chosen by the artist reflects through photography the current condition wherein two vastly distant realms—science and myth—are conflated.
3. The Power Imbalance of Space Photography: How the Rosy Future of Space Exploration Is Manipulated
Artist Lee Jaekyun addresses the colossal theme of space development. While newly learning facts we previously did not know is intriguing in itself, the true highlight of Lee’s work lies in how uncovering the hidden reality beneath them offers an opportunity—aside from the subject matter—to reconsider the conservatism and inherent power dynamics of the photographic medium. Traversing the conservative and authoritative interior photographs of space exploration institutions, our minds are already filled with a solemn thrill. The possibilities of a new cosmos and unexplored knowledge compel the viewer's steps forward. Then, an encounter with a single photograph stirs intense excitement: an image of vast, desert-like red terrain taking the form of a casual snapshot, as if captured by an informal visitor to Mars. When confronted with the truth—or pure falsehood—manipulated by that photograph, one realizes that the trick which momentarily possessed us into becoming "new users" of a new universe operated precisely through the authority and conservative attributes inherent to photography. Demonstrating that photography can not only expose the truth but also flawlessly fabricate it is precisely what Lee Jaekyun’s work and exhibition suggest.
