작업은 전남 고흥 외나로도라는 특정한 장소를 통해 산업과 생활, 기술과 지역의 관계를 탐문한다. 외나로도는 한국 우주 산업의 메카이자 누리호 발사대가 있는 기술 거점이기도 하면서, 동시에 고령화, 인프라 정체, 인구 감소 등 동시대 한국의 농어촌 의 구조적 문제를 여실히 가져가는 일반적인 지역이기도 하다. 이 작업은 이러한 우주 산업과 지역 현실의 특징에 치중해서 그 문제나 사건을 다룬다기보다, 그러한 특징을 가진 장면들이 하나의 장소에 엮여있는 것, 즉 ‘우주’라는 상징성이 지역의 생활, 문화, 거주에 어떻게 변형되어 스며드는지를 사진으로 담아내려는 시도이다.
내가 주목한 것은 우주 산업의 실태나 지역에 끼치는 긍정적, 부정적 영향, 또는 특정 사건을 재현하는데 치중하지 않고, 대신 우주 산업이 개인의 삶에 어떻게 가시적으로 스며드는지, 우주 산업이 들어서기 전과 후의 차이가 무엇인지, 한국 우주 산업에 대한 관심, 다른 지역에서 볼 수 없는 그들만의 공동체 문화에 대한 접근이다.
외나로도로 향하는 이정표에는 ‘우주로 가는 길’이라는 명칭이 붙어 있다. 이 문구는 기술적 진보를 향한 국가적 상상력과 지역의 구체적 생활 세계가 만나는 지점을 압축적으로 보여준다. 판타지와 실제 기술, 국가 산업과 지역 공동체, 미래적 상징과 노후한 현실이 공존하는 이 과도기적 풍경 속에서 외나로도는 한국 안에서 우주와 가장 가까이 맞닿은 장소가 된다. 작업은 바로 그 접촉면을 기록한다.
This work is a project that examines the relationship between industry and everyday life, technology and locality, through the specific site of Oenarodo in Goheung, Jeollanam-do in Korea. Oenarodo is known as the mecca of Korea’s space industry and a technological hub where the Nuri rocket(KSLV-ll) launch site is located. At the same time, it is also an ordinary rural and fishing community that clearly carries the structural issues faced by many contemporary regions in Korea, including aging, stagnant infrastructure, and population decline. Rather than focusing on the problems or events surrounding the space industry and local reality, this work attempts to photograph how scenes shaped by these conditions are woven together in one place — how the symbolic idea of “space” is transformed and absorbed into local life, culture, and habitation.
What I focus on is not the actual state of the space industry, its positive or negative effects on the region, or the reenactment of specific events. Instead, I look at how the space industry visibly enters individual lives, what has changed before and after its arrival, the local interest in Korea’s space industry, and the distinctive community culture that cannot be found in other regions.
The road signs leading to Oenarodo bear the phrase “The Road to Space.” This phrase concisely reveals the point where the national imagination of technological progress meets the concrete everyday world of a local community. Within this transitional landscape, where fantasy and actual technology, national industry and local community, futuristic symbolism and an aging reality coexist, Oenarodo becomes the place in Korea that comes closest to space. “Launching Town” records precisely this point of contact.
