문화재 복원/보존 작업 (양산 신흥사 대광전)

오후 4시, 센터의 문이 닫히면 오전의 기억을 더듬으며 함께 걸었던 길을 배회한다. 혼자 걷기를 수 시간, 해가 지고 나서야 이어폰을 빼고 현관을 열어젖힌다. 264만, 한국에 등록된 장애인 현황은 소수라고 하기에는 너무 큰 숫자다. 생물적 결핍에 의한 차이는 사회에서의 미필적 구분으로 이어진다. 소외와 박탈에 가려진 그들의 삶은 무엇으로 이루어져있을까. 이에 이시오와 이재균은 ‘자립, 협동, 인간’ 등 세 개의 키워드로 그들을 마주한다. 이 키워드는 2024년 여름 동안 그들과 함께 지내며 발견한 표상이다. 소외와 박탈 뒤에 숨겨진 그들의 진짜 모습은 스스로 하겠다는 의지와 누군가를 지켜야 한다는 결심, 다수에게 존중 받을 만한 인격을 지닌 사회적 인간의 모습이었다. 이시오는 이들이 자립하는 과정에 집중하여 단편 영화로 제작했다. 이재균은 이들이 함께 하는 순간의 정서적 마찰과 인도적 면모를 강조하여 사진으로 제작했다. 본 전시는 휴먼 다큐멘터리로 시작하여 판타지로 끝난다. 그들의 감정은 여전히 모호하지만, 그들의 손 끝이 어디로 향해있는지 알고 있다.

올해 여름은 유난히 더웠고, 가만히 있어도 땀이 흘렀다. 그러나 이들이 마트를 가며 흘린 땀은 식은땀이었다. 그러기를 몇 번, 그리고 점심상을 치우고 한데 모여 놀이를 했다. 휠체어를 탄 친구를 버스에 태워줬다. 가방과 메모지를 들고 레시피를 정리했다. 무거운 가방끈을 나눠 들었다. 잔소리를 하며 청소를 해줬다. 풀을 쑤고 벽지를 발랐다. 빨래를 하고 다 같이 입을 옷을 염색했다. 낙오 없이 산을 타고 함께 연꽃을 봤다. 골목을 누비며 카메라를 들이댔다. 더 불편한 친구를 위해 여정을 떠났다. 그리고 그들은 이 뜨거운 여름을 미소로 보냈다. 단 한 명도 허투루 챙기지 않고 서로가 서로를 돌보느라 바빴다. 궂은 일에 한숨 한 번 쉴 법 한데, 무어가 그리 웃긴지 눈을 마주칠 때마다 웃었다. 거리를 걸을 때면 항상 손을 잡고, 휠체어를 밀어주고, 짐을 들어주었다. 행여나 조금이라도 부정적인 모습을 보인다면 따끔하게 혼냈다. 그들은 울고, 웃었으며, 화내고, 사랑했다. 이제 그들은 마트를 갈 때 식은땀을 흘리지 않는다. 대신 서로의 손을 더욱 견고하게 잡는다.

네잎 클로버를 찾기 위해 온 동산을 헤집고 다니다 지칠 때쯤에야 보인다. 비좁은 줄기 사이에 피어난 네 장의 이파리를 지니고 있으면 마치 행운이 나를 감싸는 것 같아 소중히 간직한다. 하지만 네잎 클로버는 잎이 하나 더 붙은 돌연변이다. 그렇다고 해서 사랑하지 않을 수 있겠는가? 네잎 클로버가 행운인 이유는 비단 희귀해서일 뿐 아니라, 더 정갈하고 푸르러 보이기 때문이다. 상진, 미경, 지수, 서진, 수현, 설지, 태호, 재민, 성인, 연정, 민섭, 허정, 그리고 이 땅에 서있는 모든 장애인들도, 그러하다.

At 4 p.m., when the center’s doors close, I wander the paths I walked with others earlier in the day, retracing the memories of the morning. Walking alone for hours, I remove my earbuds after sunset and open the door. There are 2.64 million people registered as disabled in Korea, a number too large to be considered a minority. Differences caused by biological deficiencies lead to social distinctions that are often unspoken. What is the life of those hidden behind marginalization and deprivation? In response, Lee Si-o and Lee Jae-gyun face them through three key words: 'independence', 'cooperation', and 'humanity.' These key words are the representations discovered while living with them during the summer of 2024. Behind the isolation and deprivation, their true selves are seen in their determination to be self-reliant and their resolve to protect others, as social beings worthy of respect. Lee Si-o focused on their process of becoming independent, creating a short film. Lee Jae-gyun emphasized the emotional friction and humanitarian aspects of their shared moments, creating photographs. This exhibition begins as a human documentary and ends in fantasy. Their emotions remain ambiguous, but we know where their hands are reaching.

This summer was particularly hot, with sweat dripping even while standing still. However, the sweat they shed while going to the market was cold sweat. After a few of these moments, they gathered after clearing the lunch table and played together. They helped a friend in a wheelchair onto the bus. They carried bags and organized recipes. They shared the heavy weight of bags. They cleaned while nagging. They planted vegetables and wallpapered walls. They did laundry and dyed clothes together. They climbed mountains without leaving anyone behind and watched lotus flowers bloom. They wandered the alleys with cameras in hand. They set out on a journey for the more difficult friends. And they spent this hot summer smiling. Not one person was neglected; they were busy taking care of each other. Even when it would have been natural to sigh at a tough task, they laughed every time their eyes met. When they walked the streets, they always held hands, pushed wheelchairs, and carried bags. If anyone showed the slightest sign of negativity, they were sharply scolded. They cried, laughed, argued, and loved. Now, when they go to the market, they no longer sweat with discomfort. Instead, they hold each other’s hands even more firmly.

<여름날의 네잎클로버>는 부산 용호동 ‘열린문화공동체 딱’의 이용자 12명과 2024년 여름을 함께 보내며 자립, 협동, 경험하는 과정을 담은 다큐멘터리 프로젝트다.

“ Lucky clover of Summer” is a documentary project that captures the process of self-reliance, cooperation, and shared experiences, spent together with 12 users of the "Open Cultural Community Ddak" in Yongho-dong, Busan, during the summer of 2024.
